Kazakhstan has long been known to contain potash reserves; however, no mine has been developed. Preliminary estimates suggest that the country, which is favourably located in close proximity to the Asian markets, may hold enough potash reserves to make it one of the world’s top producers.
When applied to phosphorus, the Hubbert Peak Theory has created quite a stir in phosphate market, spawning a great deal of animated discussion and scientific analysis into the implications of peak phosphate.
Despite weeks of negotiations, India has yet to reach a potash supply agreement with major potash suppliers, including Canpotex, and is holding out for a lower price in order to bridge the gap between the international price of potash and the benchmark import parity price fixed by the government.
The merger between Russian potash miners Uralkali (LON:URKA) and Silvinit has been put on hold after an arbitration court in Russia agreed to hear minority shareholder Acron’s complaints.
The shares of potash producers rallied Wednesday, following the US Department of Agriculture’s forecast that corn stock would fall to its lowest level since 1996. The news sent grain futures higher, lifting demand for potash and other fertilizers.
Analysts have already warned that extremely tight phosphate inventories could put significant constraints on supplies and further buoy phosphate prices. In some areas, analysts caution that phosphate supplies may be used up, resulting in a delay for farmers to get their hands on much needed phosphate.
Potash’s value was hard hit by the economic downturn as investors abandoned agricultural commodities. The recovery for the crop nutrient has recently been underway; and with spring planting in the northern hemisphere just around the corner- things are bound to heat up.
Since the beginning of the year, the potash market has been tracking a slow route to recovery, and this has some investors crying the blues.
